 About E.G.G. Walkathon

E.G.G. Walkathon (http://baozou.lianquan.org) is a charity hiking event launched by SUF in 2011, with the purpose of raising funds for U Bricks and U Spring Programs, as well as promoting equal and wholesome growth of children. Participants challenge themselves to complete a 50-km walk within 12 hours, and raise money from network of friends / acquaintances, to achieve values of both self-challenging and charity participation. E.G.G. Walkathon aims at bringing personal and joyful philanthropic experience to participants, making philanthropy easy, and far beyond donation.

E.G.G. Walkathon 2017 will take place on May 13, Pudong, Shanghai. Registration starts now till Mar 14. Come visit our site http://baozou.lianquan.org to know more.

The Origin: Philanthropy from Grassroots

E.G.G. Walkathon is the first charity hiking event in China. It originated from a bet on a SUF team’s spring tour: “If I could walk 50 kilometers, would you donate 1 egg everyday for children in a poverty area?” This bet won unexpectedly inspiring responses, making SUF’s “One Egg” program a big success with nearly 90,000 eggs raised from Weibo and many other channels. More importantly, we have clearly sensed the voice of philanthropy, from the wide, grassroots public in China.

In October 2011, SUF officially launched the E.G.G. Walkathon, and developed it into a fundraising platform in 2012, supporting not only the “One Egg” Program, but also 4 children-focused fields spanning Nutrition & Health, Education & Development, Safety & Protection as well as Social Integration.

Since its inception, E.G.G. Walkathon has evolved, from a spontaneous nonprofit activity, to a major fundraising platform involving more than 10,000 participants each year. SUF has seen and been part of this journey, and has more belief than ever for the path to our original aspiration.

The Mission: Happy Charity, Diversified Charity and Rational Charity

E.G.G. Walkathon is one of the most influential charity hiking events in Shanghai and even nationwide. Over the past 7 years, the total number of participants has exceeded20,000, with more than $43.5 million raised through 190,000 donations. The funds raised have supported 200 nonprofit projects in China, supporting more than 380,000 children across 21 provinces.

E.G.G. Walkathon shares SUF’s mission of uniting donors, aiming at creating social responsibilities that everyone can participate and do each his or her own part in philanthropy. We advocate fun and joyful charity experience. Participants are free to do their own costumes, hold bazaars, make bets on weight-loss, talent display or even create a small competition between their friends. In the past, some had chosen to propose to their love ones. We provide diversified participation in philanthropy. Apart from donation or promoting philanthropy, you may also volunteer if you are skilled at photography / medical treatment / riding / driving or acting. We call for rational support for rational nonprofits. Each year after the event, we hold public reviews, project sharing session and follow-up site visits to present our financial statements, allocation of funds and obtain feedbacks. We encourage everyone to think about solutions to problems in our society together with SUF.

The Fund: For Equal and Wholesome Growth of Every Child

The funds raised by E.G.G. Walkathon will be used, through our U Bricks and U Spring programs, to support nonprofits and working on safe growth and equal development of children aged 0-18. Key domains include Nutrition & Health, Education & Development, Safety & Protection, and Social Integration.

Over the 7 years, E.G.G. Walkathon has made remarkable contributions to China nonprofits and social welfare: each of more than 25,000 children from Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan has been provided with an egg every school day; more than 90,000 children received supports for medical treatment and hygiene projects for boarding students; in Gansu, Shaanxi and Guizhou, the studying / reading environment of more than 200,000 boarding children and actual orphans has significantly improved; more than 60,000 boarding children, minority girls and urban migrant children received safety and/or sex education; more than 4,000 unattended children in Xinjiang, Shanghai and Shaanxi have been involved in various social integration programs.

To solve social problems calls for long-term and ongoing efforts, this is why we focus so much on sustainable nonprofits. Among projects supported by funds from E.G.G. Walkathon, the ratio of recurring support reached 82% last year. Besides, we also focus more on critical social issues of education problem of floating children in the Yangtze River Delta. We not only provide financial support, but also hold thematic workshops and introduce social resources, to pillar the development of new projects and nonprofits.
